Examples of Institutional Racism in the USA

Institutional racism means racism carried out by the government entities. It can take place in the schools, the courts or the military. It has a vastly negative effect on the group of people belonging to a same racial group. For example, in the area of medicine, unethical experiments are performed on the minority communities. Even in the twenty-first century, a number of groups find themselves affected by racism due a to plenty of reasons. If institutional racism is not brought to an end, there is a little hope that racial discrimination will be erased from the United States.

Racism in Medicine

It is an irrefutable fact that the racial bias has influenced the U.S. healthcare sector. In the past, the government was funding for syphilis studies on poor black men and Guatemalan prison inmates. Some of the government agencies played an important role in sterilizing black women Native American women. However, today government has taken initiatives to reach out to minority groups, for example, the Kaiser Family Foundation’s landmark.

Race and World War II

In the past, it has been seen that the World War II has marked racial advancements and setbacks for the United States. Minority communities like blacks, Asians, and Native Americans grabbed an opportunity to showcase their skills and intellect required to excel in the military. However, Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor forced the government to evacuate Japanese Americans from the West Coast. They were forced to live in the internment camps as it was thought they were still loyal to the Japanese empire.

Much Needed Gender Equality in the USA

As we all know that Gender Equality is the topmost social concern in today’s world. Basically, it is the state of being equal, especially in rights, status or opportunities. It is true that our world faces a persistent gap in access to opportunities and decision-making power for women and men.
It's not about only one city, state or country. It’s about the whole world; either USA, India, Canada or Australia. This high profile issue has nuanced debates taken up by political parties, activist groups, and the media.

Normally, when we talk about gender equality, we consider male and female only. We often forgot LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) community. Mostly, people don’t want to talk about these communities but they are also a part of the society.

USA is such a country in which we can see positive results in gender equality; not only between males and females rights but also in LGBT community.

There are various factors which play an important role to improve Gender Equality in the USA like education, exposure, entry in business or labor market etc.

The USA has made enormous steps since that first march in 1908: females won the privilege to vote, they make up about the portion of the workforce and they now gain a higher level of advanced educations as compared to the men, in addition to other things. Moreover, the lack of gender equality extends to females in positions of leadership in U.S. businesses as well.

If we take a look a few years back then there were no female CEOs of Fortune 500 organizations but in 2015, near about 26 women serving as CEOs of such companies that is 5.2 percent that is really a great achievement.

Not only this but also in LGBT Community, the most grounded extensions in LGBT rights in the United States have originated from the United States Supreme Court. In four landmark rulings between the years 1996 and 2015, the Supreme Court discredited a state law forbidding secured class acknowledgment in view of homosexuality, struck down homosexuality laws across the country, struck down Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act, and made same-sex marriage legitimate across the country.

We can see lots of improvement in gender equality in the USA but it's not the end it still needs lots of work. The struggle for gender equality is an ongoing battle. Join Peace First to put an end to gender inequality in the USA.
